The White House disclosed the start of federal worker layoffs on Friday, following through on earlier warnings in response to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to extend into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s process for letting employees go.

While Vought provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that agency. Additionally, a DHS spokesperson noted that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by the public and vowed to challenge the actions in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver essential functions to communities nationwide,” stated a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO responded to the announcement, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a Republican-backed bill to restore funding unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until the following week, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be ended before then.
